Apprenticeships consist of four years’ on-the-job training in the workplace for hands-on learning during the day and attending a local community college for classroom learning during the evening for one or two nights a week – depending upon your program and class schedule. Upon completion of the apprenticeship on-the-job training and school requirements, you will receive a Certificate issued by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards, State of California and NIMS Certifications.
Apprentices – union or non-union – benefit by receiving employer paid training, wage advancement (according to the minimum wage schedule by trade/occupation category) and opportunities for career advancement.
The minimum age requirement for the program is 18 years; there is no maximum age for the program. In addition, you must have a high school diploma or have passed the GED exam. You must also have a valid California Driver’s License and you must pass an entrance examination.
A new apprentice, just starting out, can expect to make 50% or more of the fully-experienced Journeyman wage – as determined by an average of all employers in your region. From there, you can expect rapid wage-advancement up to and sometimes beyond the fully experienced average wage, in accordance with (1) completing your 4-year program in good standing; and (2) maintaining your employment.
